“Babble” R&D week

Babble is an interactive early years theatre project by Flibbertigibbet Theatre.IMG_0068

Performers guide a group of children through a fantastical world in which they are encouraged through stories and games to use and celebrate their voices. Microphones around the space pick up their vocal contributions (bits of song, shouting names or nonsense words) which are instantly replayed and sonically played with, or used to form layers of a beautiful final piece of music in which the children hear themselves. My homemade live-sampling software (developed with Sarah Owen of Solarference) was just what this project needed!

img_0057.jpgWorking alongside director Stevie Thompson, performer Gwen Scott, sound artist Chris Menes (Chrx, Sat Nav) and composer Pete Judge (Eyebrow, Three Cane Whale), and others, this was a week-long creative and technical R&D at Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton.

I’m no longer performing with Ep/64 but the project continues with other musicians.

Ep/64 (Ephemeral Project 64) is free improv group formed by Dali de Saint Paul (vocals) with Dan Johnson (drums), sometimes Florent Berthaut (drums) and me (laptop).

One of our first gigs was recorded and released on Pale Master Records, Liverpool. Another live recording, plus remixes, is out on Bristol label Aphelion Editions. Check these out below…

October 2016 shipped-3-copy

With Theatre West and director Jesse Jones, at Hamilton House Bristol.

Characters spend time listening to a small battery-powered radio: I designed a method for broadcasting sounds to the actual onstage prop radio, sync’ed to sound layers from theatre’s main PA. I made these ‘Radio Biafra’ sequences from a mixture of found broadcasts, archive sounds and bespoke recordings made with the company.
